"Sin City" hype
2005-03-24, 2:23 p.m.

WARNING!!!! If you know me personally, you may read my diary, but if you do, you take the chance of reading things you don't want to know, misunderstanding what I've written and being hurt by it. If you are unsure if it is okay to read, save yourself, and me, the grief and heartache, and ask first!!! Please note that this is a DIARY, I.E. my subjective feelings, hearsay, suppositions, and outpourings of ranting of the moment. It does not represent objective news, the whole of what I think of a topic or someone, or even a thought-out representation of any of the above. This I hope you keep in mind, and thank you for reading.

Yay, diaryland works once again, so...here's an entry written recently after the previous entry...

The purpose of my last entry (see "Star Wars hype" entry) was to talk about a different movie, believe it or not, but I got a little carried away and didnt think about time. I had to leave instead of finish it, but hey, it was finished. Now, sure, Star Wars brings up a lot of hype for the kiddies, but its still a PG rated movie, right? Wrong, it is possibly going to be the first PG-13 rated Star Wars film, which I think is a waste. But hey, whatever makes George Lucas happy, he and little kids are who hes making these movies for, which he has said. But PG-13 isnt for little kiddies.

But still, this isnt my most anticipated movie in my mind.

Last night, I was watching the beginning of the OC, and I started screaming in excitement, literally, when a TV spot for Sin City came on the screen. It was the first I had seen of the movie, besides really poorly downloaded movies on the internet, and since the best place to download stuff is at school, I had no sound either.

Sin City is directed by one of my favorite directors of all time, Robert Rodriguez. Alongside with him is Frank Miller, author/creator/illustrator of the Sin City comics, or graphic novels, rather, also directing with Rodriguez. Other films by Robert Rodriguez include the Spy Kids movies and the Antonio Banderas movies, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which both were started with Rodriguezs hit directorial debut El Mariachi.

Although Rodriguez has a really cool style to his self-edited movies, he is also the score composer. Rodriguez makes making movies more fun than it looked before. Plus his movies themselves look like a lot of fun to make. He has his own movie production company, known as Troublemaker Studios, too, which is pretty much a movie studio in his garage of his home in Texas. I believe his studio used to be called Los Hooligans, based on the title of his own comic strip.

Right from the start, Rodriguez was the master of low-budget films. Desperado was made for just under $7 Million dollars.

He is friends with Quentin Tarantino, one of todays most popular directors who is most likely my favorite, being another director with his own really cool style of movies. Quentins style is similar to a chapter book, which is brought out in his movies because Tarantino once wanted to be an author. Tarantino starred opposite George Clooney in Rodriguezs From Dusk till Dawn.

Robert Rodriguez also ended up directing a scene in Pulp Fiction, the film that made Quentin Tarantino infamous after making so much fame from Reservoir Dogs. Tarantinos Kill Bill films have done quite well, and Volume 2 had its score done by Rodriguez, along with The RZA, as in the first one. Rodriguez did the music for $1.

And for payback, Tarantino has done one scene in Sin City for $1.

Sin City looks like a very artsy film, with being mostly black and white, except for a few scenes with Nick Stahl, played a yellow-skinned man, and a woman with a red dress on. At least. But Sin City is said to be very true to the comic, with shots and dialogue adapted straight from the original comic's panels.

Not only does the look of the film excite me, but the castincluding Mickey Rourke, who looks quite different, with his nose formed different. He looks like the main character in the comic, though. He plays Marv, whos girlfriend is killed while hes sleeping in bed with her.

Rosario Dawson, from Men in Black II, and The 25th Hour, playing a hooker.

A very teasing Jessica Alba, playing a stripper.

Clive Owen, from King Arthur, and a candidate for the next James Bond.

The always pleasing Bruce Willis, in a role as a cop with a heart problem. This film may take him back to the days of The Last Boy Scout, I think, because of the violence. The Last Boy Scout is a damn good movie, too.

And many others, Benicio Del Toro, who also changed his look quite a bit, Nick Stahl as the Yellow Bastard, who is yellow. Josh Hartnett, ladies, hes cool, in the scene that sold the film to director/creator Frank Miller. Elijah Wood looks very mysterious. And Brittany Murphy (8 Mile) Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile), Michael Madsen (Kill Bill Vol. 2) , and Maria Bello (Secret Window, Payback) are sure to add a lot of cool to the film as well.

The violence of the film also attracts me. Movies, first of all, are visually exciting. As they should be. Movies like Gosford Park, are not visually exciting, and is a film of which will forever be known to me as one of the most boring movies ever. I mean, who was that movie made for? Movies these days need to be much more visually exciting, making you laugh because theyre so much fun. Like the Indiana Jones movies, directed by Steven Spielbergand definitely the Star Wars movies created by George Lucas.

This movie is definitely one of my most anticipated films ever, and it comes out on my dads 50th birthday. Which means I may not be seeing it on opening day, but I am so damn excited.

And I was watching the preview, er, TV spot just last night, so excited for the film. I noticed that there werent many TV spots at all during The OC and whatever else next came on, even though the programs were sponsored by Sin City. I think the attention the film is getting on the internet says enough about how opening weekend will go. So many times has the preview been downloadedand Im just talking about in my house. During the show after The OC, I took a quick showerand once the show ended, there was no preview. So Im guessing the fucking Fox Network put the sneak preview on during my damn shower, those bastards. I got so pissed off. Damn.

From vh1.com:

The Eisner Award-winning comic series Sin City comes to life in this live-action feature adaptation from director Robert Rodriguez and creator Frank Miller. Interweaving multiple storylines from the series' history, this violent crime noir paints the picture of the ultimate town without pity through the eyes of its roughest characters. There's the street thug Marv (Mickey Rourke), whose desperate quest to find the killer of a prostitute named Goldie (Jaime King) will lead him to the foulest edges of town. Inhabiting many of those areas is Dwight (Clive Owen), a photographer in league with the sordid ladies of Sin City, headed by Gail (Rosario Dawson), who opens up a mess of trouble after tangling with a corrupt cop by the name of Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro). Finally, there's Hartigan (Bruce Willis), an ex-cop with a heart problem who's hell-bent on protecting a stripper named Nancy (Jessica Alba). Featuring a who's who supporting cast that includes Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, Devon Aoki, and Nick Stahl, Sin City promises to be one of the most direct translations from page to screen of a comic series, with shots and dialogue adapted straight from the original comic's panels. Rodriguez reportedly quit the Director's Guild when they refused to let Frank Miller co-direct the film, a deal hashed out after the Spy Kids director developed and shot a scene utilizing a green-screen process to harness the stark, black-and-white look of the books, which he then secretly screened to Miller as a pitch for collaboration on the film. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
