Prisoners (2013)
2013-12-16, 12:58 am

WARNING!!!! If you know me personally, you may read my diary, but if you do, you take the chance of reading things you don't want to know, misunderstanding what I've written and being hurt by it. If you are unsure if it is okay to read, save yourself, and me, the grief and heartache, and ask first!!! Please note that this is a DIARY, I.E. my subjective feelings, hearsay, suppositions, and outpourings of ranting of the moment. It does not represent objective news, the whole of what I think of a topic or someone, or even a thought-out representation of any of the above. This I hope you keep in mind, and thank you for reading.

"Prisoners" is the "Silence of the Lambs" of this year, and dare I say...it's better?
With commentary on religion and politics using symbolism and psychology, this is much more than just a flick or a night out at the movies. This one stays with you in many ways. The unforgettable story mixed with haunting photography (shot by the Coen brothers' frequent collaborator, Roger Deakins) also features powerful performances full of passion and anger. This is not something you see in many movies anymore, as the last great films of the genre were "Mystic River," maybe "Gone Baby Gone," and "Ransom" before that.
The most remarkable parts of the whole film...are the fine direction and near-perfect editing. This film is perfectly paced.
The story itself, with no spoilers besides what you will see in trailers/previews, is about a man losing his daughter. Now, the story starts after the first scene, wasting no time after some brief character development. It raises a lot of questions about what a parent might become capable of doing in the situation given these motivations, and motivations change and are different in each character. I've certainly gained a new respect for Jake Gyllenhaal, but even more so for this director, Denis Villeneuve.
Real quick warning: This film is not for the light-hearted movie-goer, because it actually begs you to pay attention, unlike "Transformers." Every detail in the film seems to be a part of the puzzle, but let me tell you what the movie promises: Constant entertainment and SPOILER alert: although upsetting at times, the film comes as close to a satisfying ending as possible.
