WARNING!!!! If you know me personally, you may read my diary, but if you do, you take the chance of reading things you don't want to know, misunderstanding what I've written and being hurt by it. If you are unsure if it is okay to read, save yourself, and me, the grief and heartache, and ask first!!! Please note that this is a DIARY, I.E. my subjective feelings, hearsay, suppositions, and outpourings of ranting of the moment. It does not represent objective news, the whole of what I think of a topic or someone, or even a thought-out representation of any of the above. This I hope you keep in mind, and thank you for reading.

I want to re-invent Hollywood.
I want to go back in time.
I want to start a company that will be seen not only as a promise and a brand, but as classic. People will stop caring about story or jokes or explosions and just go because I will have created a consistent experience in every project. My pictures will be atmospheric, nostalgiac, well-written, and story oriented character-driven films that will be seen as events.

Terrible time to be a celebrity.
(Memes, fake celebrities, no movie stars)
Nervous wreck at premier. "Do you know what kind of actor you are?" No. He figured out he could do this when it was well received.
Didn't want to get comfortable with a drama. Jerry Bruckheimer saw something in him. The Rock and Leaving Las Vegas done same time. Called Connery maestro. Mentored him. Encouragement and empowerment. Forget about Academy Award. Pick material based on challenges and uncomfort. Always stay a student, never be a maestro.
Get "naked" as a film presence.
Wife connected with Joe as him. Less acting. just being.
Kinda smiled at the clip about kid buying alcohol. Mostly just looked intense or even sad.
Paul Schraeder Pauline Kael had knowledge and film comment. Personal life makes it into film reviews. How does personal aspects eclipsing the work itself make sense. "Here we go again with the memes."
Facetime is extraordinarily helpful to see 8 year old and wife. Keeps intimacy. Tries to work on family vacations to take with them.
He's satisfied a personal need for style with Face/Off.

Wanted to be naked playing panflute.
At stoplight one time, saw guy anxious to go (green), leaned back, put hand on head almost like falling asleep...he wants to do that in a movie.
Your place in film history: he's a student. Seasoned kinds of performances.
Doesn't know final evaluation of body of work.
Two aspects to sci fi
sci fi provides engine to get "far out." (ghost rider)
emotional content still there within the concept.
be political in positive way making it important genre (sci fi, district 9)
Thought Moonstruck wasn't right for him, he wanted to do Vampire's Kiss.
David Lynch impression to lighten mood on Joe
"Hey man, let's get drunk." favorite line to Anton Yelchin
"Thank you for saving my childhood" to Adam West on Jay Leno
"I saw Nic TRY to be Adam West"
Unique encounter: in Romania next to Transylvania woman tried to bite him. He was scared.
After mistakes, be alchemist. Turn lead into goals. Puts mistakes in the work. Talked back at cops, put it into Joe. Do something positive with it.
Be proud of yourself and do something positive with it.
How long do you stay in her character

I want to inspire you.
Let me brag first (and throughout haha), because I cannot believe this experience was entirely free. I was even fed lunch everyday (although I skipped lunch one day so I wouldn't miss any film panels that took place during) and given free booze, burgers, and fries at night.
I've met creators and innovators and authors and entertainers.
THIS is the meaning of life.
This is also a job, albeit one without pay, that has been more rewarding than any other job I've had. I was able to have freedom. I could go wherever I wanted almost whenever I wanted. I could do my part and then just sit in on these talks and just learn, observe, or experience. With this freedom, no pay, and even accidentally coming in late one day, did this make me slack off? Absolutely not. I engaged with more dedication. I could have conversations with these speakers to make them more comfortable. I was there for them, and I promised them and followed through. Why do so many people not care about the jobs that pay them to be there? Why did so many of the volunteers not care about any panels or worry about seeing any music stars (besides Lady Gaga, everyone was more interested in any parties)?
When there is no incentive (money), and we're doing what we want without fear or consequence as a main motivator, people will excel. This is what life and living and having a "job" should be about. This was "interest" as culture.
These are all people talking about what they do with their lives.
They are spreading their wisdom and ideas and that's what makes this world go around. I'm so lucky to be a part of this, and thankful I became a volunteer. I can't believe I saw the creator (co-founder) of Reddit for free in his "Be Awesome without their Permission" panel. The main theme was "Don't Give Up." He told the story of a friend of his that decided he wanted to take pictures. He bought a camera and moved to New York. His pictures were terrible, but he was obsessed. He researched photography online. He studied techniques and styles, and started something called "Humans of New York" that I highly recommend looking into if you haven't already. Very inspiring stuff. What I see when I look at his pictures (and read little tidbits of conversations that accompany them) is that everyone is exceptional. After seeing enough celebrities (honestly more meaningful from a distance as if watching a talk show or conversation), the addictive feeling of seeing them didn't go away, but it became more similar to the feelings I get when I'm with friends and family. (If you've ever watched a couple hours of a TV show, I'm sure you could relate as the characters are people you spend almost too much time with).
Jeffrey Tambor's (Arrested Development) best piece of advice was to basically grab shoulders. If they turn you away, just remind them of the fact that they were in your position at one point just trying to get someone to notice them. Don't be afraid to grab some shoulders.
(This is my contribution:) You'll effectively turn some heads.
Jason Bateman added that we all learned about being desperate in sixth grade so we all know not to get to that point. "Right up until that point, though, do whatever you can." Bother people to notice you.
I also met a sports writer who described his pursuit of his dream job and when he got it, it turned out he was so micro-managed he couldn't stand it. Every single one of them, speakers and attendees I spoke with were all a part of a great struggle. As much as they would almost advertise how difficult their lives have gotten, they always do what they want to do, meaning they choose to do what they're doing. People in the entertainment industry, however, would describe a stroke of luck that got them where they are today. After Bateman got his job on "Arrested Development," it wasn't until "the first actor started acting" when Mr. Tambor had his first monologue and set the tone of the entire show with his dry delivery...that was when Bateman was first inspired and felt lucky to do what he was actually comfortable doing. Now he's directed his first movie and is set (funded) on directing his next, which will be a type of murder mystery (did not sound comedic at all).
If there's any piece of mind, no matter what you find to do in life, there is always time to screw around and relax. I met a man who works in Los Angeles for NASA who spent all last week "binge-watching" "House of Cards." He asked which episode I was on, as I brought it up, after telling me he's seen every episode now. I'm six episodes in, so I asked him to envy me a little, to which he politely replied "I do."
There was also a spiritual therapist. Of course, I'll admit he was on the bus with me one day, so at first it was harder for me to think of him as intelligent let alone the "genius" he claimed to be. "When I'm dead, they'll remember me as a genius." I knew he knew what he was talking about if only because he was British. He told me many of our problems and frustrations could be solved by holding a rock in one hand. He recommended, and even pulled out crystal. I held it, and it was cold. Of course, my hands were cold. He said this was because I was holding everything in. I like to remain a mystery (I am a "Mr. E" ha (ha)), I put it, and he agreed. The energy that made my hands cold supposedly stays inside me. With the crystal, eventually it would warm as energy was transferred to it. According to him, this was the same effect as venting (trolling on the internet or arguing with someone also do the trick). As I'm writing this, I can assure you my hands are warm. I certainly feel at peace.
His lesson is the one I'll end with: We're all humans, and we're on this earth together to help each other. SXSW (South by Southwest) reassured me of this. It will be remembered as one of the greatest experiences of my life and a great restoration of my faith in humanity.

Robots replacing people? No.
People will be educated to do other things.

Humans of New York guy sucked at taking pictures. Never gave up, never stopped obsessing and being passionate about it, researching photos and craft and techniques.
Not about one guy on mic preaching, it's about all of us to make things catch on. Nobody should go without internet when people still do use dial up in rural america.
