Reflections on the Watergate Scandal
2022-06-17, 2:30 am

WARNING!!!! If you know me personally, you may read my diary, but if you do, you take the chance of reading things you don't want to know, misunderstanding what I've written and being hurt by it. If you are unsure if it is okay to read, save yourself, and me, the grief and heartache, and ask first!!! Please note that this is a DIARY, I.E. my subjective feelings, hearsay, suppositions, and outpourings of ranting of the moment. It does not represent objective news, the whole of what I think of a topic or someone, or even a thought-out representation of any of the above. This I hope you keep in mind, and thank you for reading.

Fifty years ago...as of this morning, June 17th, 2022, attempts to undermine democracy were well underway when "they" were caught. It was all about having an effect on the election process when five burglars broke into the Watergate Hotel to fix a minor flaw in a wiretapping scheme. As Richard Nixon was ridiculously ahead in the polls (he would win every state except for Massachusetts), the motivation behind it all was fear and paranoia. These emotions proved to be driven by hate as he tried to cover the whole thing up by lying to the American People.
His final speech as President gave us this quote: 'Always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.'
Nixon became the only president in our nation's history to resign because he did not have the right-wing support to keep him "in the game," so to speak. In a later interview, when journalist David Frost asked Nixon whether the president ought to be permitted to do something illegal in certain situations (such as against antiwar groups) if he decides "it's in the best interests of the nation or something," Nixon replied: "Well, when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal", by definition.
Fifty years later, the illegalities are much more obvious and, while more stupid, much more aggressive. We're encouraging people to not vote, to not be able to vote, for votes not to count, and for elections to be stolen. Our election process has both never been more secure and never been more insecure. The lessons we must learn is that transparency is vital to the process, and the process itself must be protected at all costs. Oh, and these don't even matter without participation. We must seek truth (inspired by facts) and use our truth to VOTE!
